About the role
As an Operations & Systems Engineer, you'll design how GradIntent's everyday work could run faster and more smoothly. Imagine every task at GradIntent is done by hand today. Your job is to design better workflows (the steps a task follows from start to finish) and build automations and dashboards that make them easier. GradIntent will set the goals. How you reach them is up to you. This role is engineering applied to a real business: you work out how a task should flow, find what would slow it down, and design a better system. You'll work directly with our founder, who reviews your work and gives feedback every week, and alongside other interns across social media, content, web and tech.
What you'll do
Example projects you might work on
- Design a workflow for handling internship applications, from the form to the shortlist
- Build a dashboard (one screen that shows the key numbers) for tracking content across channels
- Design how interns' work could move through review and approval
These are just ideas. You can propose your own.
1. Choose a process
- Pick an everyday task, such as handling applications or approving content
- Imagine it's done completely by hand, and write down every step
2. Map it
- Draw process maps (simple diagrams showing each step of a task, from start to finish)
- Spot bottlenecks (the steps where work would slow down or get stuck) and tasks that could be automated
3. Design solutions
- Design a better workflow
- Pitch your design to GradIntent for approval before you build it
4. Build
- Build your workflow using automations, dashboards, templates or trackers, learning what you need as you go
- Use sample data (made-up test information) to show how it works
- Write a short guide so others could use it
5. Testing and comparing
- Test your workflow with other interns using sample data, and improve it from their feedback
- Compare the manual process with your new one, such as time saved or fewer mistakes
Throughout: work with other interns across every team. Ask how they would use your workflows, and let their feedback shape what you build.
What you'll deliver
- Process maps for the tasks you worked on
- At least one working workflow, automation or dashboard, built with sample data and credited to you
- A comparison showing how your workflow improves on doing the task by hand
- A final report on your work: what you mapped, what you built and the results, which you can use in your university applications
What you'll learn
This role gives you hands-on exposure to fields you can study at university:
Engineering
- Engineering Management
- Industrial Engineering (designing efficient processes and systems)
- Systems Engineering (designing how complex systems work together)
Business & Management
- Operations Management (running a business smoothly day to day)
Computer Science
- Process Automation (using technology to do repetitive tasks)
- No-Code and Low-Code Development (building apps and tools with little or no coding)
Data Science & Analytics
- Data Analytics
- Data Visualisation (turning numbers into clear charts)
Who should apply
- You like figuring things out on your own and learning new things as you go
- You enjoy understanding how things work and making them better
- You like solving puzzles and finding smarter ways to do things
- You're organised and can deliver on a weekly schedule
Why join
- Work directly with GradIntent's founder, with weekly feedback and mentorship
- Remote, with no office visits
- Flexible hours, planned around your school and exam schedule
- A real portfolio project for your resume and university applications
- Guidance on presenting this experience in your applications
- A certificate of completion
- A recommendation letter from GradIntent's founder, available on request
